Deschutes River - Lower - November 19th, 2003 |
FISHING: Good
maps
Cool weather has some fish moving around! Depending on who you talk to and who you believe, guys are picking up a few Steelies here and there. If the steelhead fishing is breaking your spirit, the trout make up for the absence of our larger queries. We took trout on just about everything. The fishing was most consistent in the early and late parts of the day. Look for shadows on the water.
Flies to use: Dries: Stone Flies, Golden Stones, PMD's, Mahoganny Duns, Dark Caddis Emergers: PMD's, Caddis Nymphs: Stone Flies, Golden Stones, Pheasant Tails, Prince Steelhead Flies: Freight Train, Blue Suede Shoe, Green Butt Skunk, Articulated Leeches, Skitter Skater, Purple Muddler, Green Muddler.

Hosmer Lake has been fishing well. Early and late seem to be the mode of operation for now. Damsel flies near the shore are a good bet during the day. Evening is definitely the Caddis Show. The channel still has some lunkers lurking, but these guys are lip-locked by now. Still if you feel lucky and can not resist temptation, throw a small leech pattern and twitch it ever so slowly. Flies to use: Dries: Caddis, Cream Comparadun, Blue or Yellow Damsel Nymphs: Damsel nymphs, Serendipity, Hare's Ear Streamers: Black, Burgundy, Brown Leeches Call the shop and ask for T.R. or Kevin for more info on our latest patterns and most current conditions, 541-330-5950.

Looks for riffles. The trout are in the tops of the riffles, the white fish are below the riffles. This can be a great section of river for the first time angler. The challenge being finding access. Call or stop by the shop to get a map of local river access. Unfortunately, the people are as prodigious as the swarms of caddis. You will find fish rising all day. Look for the swarms of caddis in the late afternoon and evening and tiny mayflies all day. If you find the need to go under, try throwing a Pheasant Tail with a small Zebra Midge dropper under a pretty short indicator. Flies to use: Dries: PMD's, Mahoganny Duns, Dark Caddis, Midges Emergers: PMD's, Caddis, Midges Nymphs: Pheasant Tails, Prince, Midges, Serendipities (Red, Orange, Green) Call the shop and ask for T.R. or Kevin to get the most up to date info on gear and bugs! 1(866) 393-7687.

Cloudy conditions are improving the fishing. Clouds during the day can trigger hatches of mayflies, caddis and crane flies at any time. So keep an eyeout for the rising fish. Don't forget to try some of the more challenging spots; it could pay off big. Fish the riffles with big comparaduns and emerger droppers! Your best bet is to fish early, stalk during the heat of the day and fish hard for that last hour before dark. You can still have a couple of good days now and then with fish up to 18-20". Try PMD's during the day and evening in the eddies and in shady sections. Flies to use: Dries: Stone Flies, Golden Stones, PMD's, Mahoganny Duns, Dark Caddis, creamy orange crane flies. Emergers: PMD's, Caddis Nymphs: Stone Flies, Golden Stones, Pheasant Tails, Prince Call the shop and ask for T.R. or Kevin to get the most up to date info on gear and bugs! 1(866) 393-7687.
